Compassionate Leave
Discretionary or contractual time off granted to deal with a personal or family emergency or crisis.
Compassionate leave is time away from work to cope with a distressing personal situation โ a serious family illness, an accident or another emergency. It overlaps with, but is often broader than, bereavement leave.
Because it responds to unpredictable events, policies usually allow managers some discretion over the amount and whether it is paid.
Handling requests with empathy and consistency builds trust and reassures employees that they will be supported in difficult moments.
