Gross Negligence
A serious failure to take reasonable care that can amount to gross misconduct and justify dismissal.
Gross negligence is a severe lack of care or attention that goes well beyond ordinary carelessness โ such as ignoring clear safety procedures or acting with reckless disregard for the consequences.
Because of its seriousness, it can constitute gross misconduct and, potentially, justify dismissal, particularly where it endangers people, property or the business.
Employers must still investigate the facts fully and follow a fair procedure before concluding that negligence is grave enough to warrant summary dismissal.
