Letter of Offer

A written offer of employment setting out the main terms a candidate is being asked to accept.

A letter of offer is the written document an employer sends to a successful candidate confirming that the role is being offered and outlining the key terms โ€” position, start date, pay, working hours and any conditions such as references or right-to-work verification.

It usually precedes the full contract of employment and marks the point at which the candidate can formally accept. Offers are often made conditional on satisfactory checks, so the letter should state clearly what those conditions are.

In Ireland, employers must also give employees core terms of employment in writing within tight statutory deadlines โ€” some within five days of starting โ€” so the letter of offer often works alongside, rather than replaces, the written statement of terms.
