Reference Check
Verification of a candidate's employment history and suitability with previous employers.
A reference check is the process of contacting a candidate's former employers or nominated referees to confirm details of their employment and gather views on their suitability. It validates the picture built during recruitment before a hire is confirmed.
Many employers now provide only factual references โ confirming dates and job title โ for fear of liability, so checks increasingly focus on verification rather than opinion. Structured reference questions tied to the role produce more useful, consistent information.
Reference data must be handled lawfully under GDPR, with candidates aware that checks will take place. For roles working with vulnerable groups, additional vetting such as Garda vetting in Ireland or DBS checks in the UK may also be required.
