Rostering
Scheduling employees' shifts to match staffing needs and legal requirements.
Rostering, or scheduling, is the process of assigning employees to shifts so that the right number of appropriately skilled people are available when needed. It is central to sectors such as retail, hospitality, healthcare and manufacturing.
Good rostering balances several tensions: meeting demand, controlling labour cost, respecting employees' preferences and availability, and complying with working-time and rest rules. Poor scheduling drives both overtime cost and staff dissatisfaction.
In Ireland, rostering must respect the Organisation of Working Time Act and the banded-hours provisions that entitle regular workers to a contract reflecting the hours they actually work. Software that links rostering to time and attendance and payroll reduces errors and improves fairness.
