Skills Matrix
A grid mapping which employees hold which skills, and at what level.
A skills matrix is a table that maps the skills or competencies a team needs against the people who hold them, usually showing each person's level of proficiency. At a glance it reveals strengths, gaps, single points of failure and development opportunities.
Managers use skills matrices to plan work, identify who can cover critical tasks, target training where capability is thin, and support workforce and succession planning. Keeping the matrix current turns it into a live planning tool rather than a one-off snapshot.
As skills-based approaches to talent grow, maintaining skills data within an HR system โ rather than in scattered spreadsheets โ makes it easier to search for capabilities across the organisation and to plan development at scale.
