Turnover (Staff Turnover)
The rate at which employees leave an organisation and are replaced over a given period.
Staff turnover measures how frequently employees leave and need replacing, usually expressed as a percentage over a year. It is split into voluntary turnover (resignations) and involuntary turnover (dismissals and redundancies).
Some turnover is natural and even beneficial, but high or regrettable turnover is costly and disruptive, and often signals problems with management, reward or culture.
Analysing turnover data, ideally alongside exit interviews, helps employers target the causes rather than the symptoms.
