Whistleblowing Policy
A policy setting out how workers can safely report wrongdoing and how the employer responds.
A whistleblowing policy sets out how workers can raise concerns about wrongdoing โ such as illegality, danger or malpractice โ and how the organisation will handle those reports. It gives people a safe, clear route to speak up and reassures them they will be protected.
In Ireland, the Protected Disclosures Acts, which implement the EU Whistleblowing Directive, require many employers to have formal internal reporting channels, to acknowledge and follow up disclosures within set timeframes, and to safeguard the identity of the person reporting.
An effective policy names how and to whom concerns can be raised, guarantees protection from penalisation, and explains the process and expected timelines. Training designated recipients and maintaining confidentiality are essential to make it work in practice.
