The 30 Most Important HR Metrics You Need to Track

MAR 25, 2026

Data-driven HR starts with measuring the right things. Here are the metrics that matter most, grouped by area.

Why HR metrics matter

HR metrics give you evidence to support strategic decisions, justify headcount requests, and demonstrate HR's contribution to business performance. Without them, HR risks being seen as a purely administrative function rather than a strategic partner. Start with a small set of high-impact metrics and build from there; tracking everything produces noise, not insight.

Recruitment metrics

Time-to-hire measures the days between opening a role and a candidate accepting an offer. Cost-per-hire captures all direct and indirect recruitment costs divided by the number of hires. Offer acceptance rate shows how often candidates say yes. Quality of hire, typically assessed at the 90-day and one-year marks using performance scores, tells you whether your recruitment process is finding the right people. Source-of-hire data helps you invest in the channels that deliver the best candidates.

Retention and engagement metrics

Employee turnover rate, calculated as the number of leavers divided by average headcount, is the headline retention metric. Distinguish voluntary from involuntary turnover: high voluntary turnover in specific departments is a signal worth investigating. Retention rate of high performers is equally important, since the cost of losing a top contributor far exceeds the cost of losing an average performer. Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS), derived from pulse surveys, gives you a fast read on engagement trends.

Learning and development metrics

Training completion rate shows whether employees are engaging with development programmes. Training cost per employee benchmarks your L&D investment. Skills-gap analysis, repeated annually, tracks whether your workforce capabilities are keeping pace with business needs. Post-training performance improvement, where measurable, demonstrates the ROI of L&D spend.
