Absence Management
The policies and processes an organisation uses to record, monitor and reduce unplanned employee absence.
Absence management covers everything an employer does to track time away from work, understand why it happens and support people back to full capacity. It spans certified sickness, self-certified short spells, appointments and unauthorised absence, and usually sits within an HRIS so that patterns become visible rather than anecdotal.
A mature approach balances compassion with consistency. Return-to-work conversations, clear reporting lines and trigger points (often measured with the Bradford Factor) help managers act early and fairly, while occupational health referrals support genuine long-term cases.
Good data is the foundation. When absence is logged accurately, HR can distinguish a wellbeing problem from a policy problem and intervene appropriately, protecting both the individual and the wider team.
