Bradford Factor

A formula that weights frequent short absences more heavily than occasional long ones to flag absence patterns.

The Bradford Factor is a scoring method that measures the disruptive impact of absence. It multiplies the number of separate absence spells by itself and then by the total days absent, so several short, unplanned absences score far higher than one long spell.

The tool helps employers set fair, consistent trigger points for review conversations, focusing attention on patterns that most disrupt operations.

It should inform judgement, not replace it. Scores must be applied sensitively, with proper regard for disability, chronic illness and protected leave, or they risk being unfair and even unlawful.
