Burnout
A state of physical and emotional exhaustion caused by prolonged, unmanaged workplace stress.
Burnout is a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It shows up as exhaustion, cynicism or detachment from the job, and reduced professional effectiveness.
It is an organisational issue as much as an individual one. Excessive workload, poor autonomy, unclear expectations and a lack of recognition are common drivers.
Employers reduce burnout by managing workload, encouraging genuine breaks, supporting flexible working and building a culture where people can raise concerns before they reach crisis point.
