Probation Period
An initial period of employment during which suitability for the role is assessed.
A probation period is a defined phase at the start of employment during which the employer assesses whether the new employee is suited to the role, and the employee decides whether it is right for them.
During probation, expectations, support and feedback should be clear, with regular check-ins so any concerns are addressed early rather than at the last minute.
Terms such as length, notice and the possibility of extension should be set out in the contract, and fair process still applies.
