Probationary Review
A structured assessment of a new hire's suitability during or at the end of probation.
A probationary review is a formal check on how a new employee is progressing during their probationary period, typically held at its midpoint and end. It gives both parties an honest read on fit, performance and any support needed.
The review compares performance against the objectives and expectations set at the start, notes strengths and development areas, and results in a clear decision: confirm employment, extend probation where permitted, or, if necessary, end it.
In Ireland, because fair-procedure protections now apply during probation and probationary periods are generally capped at six months, well-documented reviews are important. They evidence that any decision was reasoned and fair.
