Absenteeism refers to a recurring pattern of unscheduled absence that goes beyond normal, expected time off. Isolated sick days are part of working life; absenteeism describes a trend that disrupts service, raises costs and burdens colleagues who cover the gap.
Causes are rarely simple. Chronic illness, caring responsibilities, low morale, workplace stress and disengagement can all contribute, so treating absenteeism purely as a discipline issue usually misses the point.
Employers reduce it by measuring accurately, spotting triggers early and addressing root causes — from workload to management style — rather than only the symptom.
